Historical Development
As with other churches in the area, the best information is that Mt. Olive Baptist Church started under a bush harbor in 1870, on Faulk’s Plantation one mile west of where the present building now stands. The church was organized by Brother Alfred Durham (a minister), Deacons Counsel Sams, Isaac Williams, Spring Shine, Dock Mims, January Mims, and Sisters Gracie Sams and Nelsie Mims. Reverend Thornton Frye was the first pastor. He served one year. The First “Mother of the Church” was Sister Gracie Sams. In 1900 the church was moved by horse and buggy from Faulk’s Plantation to its current location. Mt. Olive has always had strong leadership that looked to the Hill for its help. Through prayers, dedication, and faithfulness to God, The Mt. Olive of today is still a church that puts God first. We are a church whose leadership is strongly rooted in Christ.Mission Statement
Mt.Olive Baptist Church strives to Glorify God, through the Magnification of His Word, thereby Growing in Grace. The mission also consists of preaching and teaching, announcing and testifying, making disciples and bearing witness. Further the mission focuses on the initial and continuing verbal declaration of the gospel, the announcement of Christ's death and resurrection and the life found in him when we repent and believe.
